Default Dual Boot setup - 11-10-2003 , 09:49 AM

I will be taking a course in Application Development for
Web using .NET. The university has given us a copy of
2003 Server to load. Recommendations are to load it on a
different drive and configure our machines as "dual boot"
machines. I have installed a second hard drive but don't
know what to do next. The class begins in January but I
don't want to wait that long to get set up.

help?

Have you tried inserting the Windows 2003 Server CD in a CD drive, letting
it autostart and reading about options? I believe one available lets you
install W2003S as a second OS in a different partition, rather than as an
upgrade. That process will automatically create a boot menu that will appear
each time you start your PC, allowing you to choose between OS's.
It's a pretty straight forward procedure, provided you're careful to read
each choice and make sure you *don't* select anything that says *upgrade*
(thus, replacing your existing OS) and making *sure* the target partition is
different from the one where your current OS is installed.

As the whole adventure of creating a dual boot system can be a bit confusing
the first time around, have you talked with the instructor of this class to
see if some detailed instructions are available? Failing that, is there some
faculty or staff techie who might be willing to provide some guidance?
HTH.

Thanks for the advice. I'm currently installing an
additional disk drive so I won't have to deal with
the "partitioning" issue. then I'll follow your advice.

Thanks again.
