Default Endless Upgrades - 07-10-2003 , 02:42 AM

I'm am NOT a very happy camper at the moment. I returned to school, last
October, as part of a voc rehab program, in order to study computer
programming. Well, we first used VB 6.0, then we had to buy Visual Studio
2002, and NOW we're told we have to buy Visual Studio 2003 AND it's not
backwards compatible. When are the endless upgrades going to stop?????!!!!!
This will be the THIRD version of Visual Studio I've had to buy in just nine
months!!! In light of that, why don't recent purchases of the Academic
edition get a reduced rate? Sure, it's much less than the other versions
but, we also shouldn't have to keep buying new versions every few months!
I'v notice that other versions can upgrade from Visual Study 2002 to 2003
for just $29, and yet the Academic version does not qualify. Ugh!

Not a happy camper.

Jeff,

You need to take this up with your school. I teach at SJSU and as part of
the MSDNAA (Peter mentioned this) I can GIVE my students FREE, fully
functional versions of VS.NET.

None of my students have your complaints because there is no need. And
Peter said the pricing is reasonable. Let me put it this way, it is so
cheap that any higher level institution that does not do this just doesn't
have the fiscal intelligence to call themselves an educational institution.
I have yet to discuss this issue with any institution where they could
justify not purchasing the program.

Also, I agree with Peter about the timing issue. This again is your schools
problem, not Microsoft's.

Take care,

Fletcher

Thanks Fletcher,

I just checked and my school does belong to MSDNAA although, apparently,
they just recently became a member. I was just asked to write to the head of
my department about it and, hopefully, this will work.

Thanks!

Jef

THANKS Peter and Fletcher!

I just heard from the department head and we ARE eligible for FREE
software - apparently, they weren't aware of it until you told me. I
already
e-mailed my instructor and asked for "extra-credit" for the information
you
provided.

Jeff

I'm very glad to hear that this is working out for you, Jeff. Best of luck
in your studies!

Thank you very much - pulling a 4.0 <GRIN> but it's tough - I'm changing
careers (and I'm not that young) so I've got to do well. Again, thanks!
