Default Outlook Express 6 Opening Error - 04-17-2007 , 04:58 PM

When I try to open Outlook Express 6 an error window pops up, then disappears
before I can read it. I downloaded and installed the recommended Hotfix, but
that did not solve the problem.

Thanks. Like a dope, I neglected to save many of my folders when I had a
chance. Now I need some of them.

OE6 doesn't open at all. A long error message pops up for 1-2 seconds and
disappears. I tried the remedies on sites suggested by both pvdg42 and Steve.
Neither worked. I rebooted, pressed F8, and then selected "last known good, "
OE6 actually opened for a few seconds, then closed. Long error message again
popped up.

Along the way, I accidentally deleted my OE .dbx folders. Not a big deal as
I have other sources for the info. I'm considering last resort of
Uninstall/Reinstall.

Start here: http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Move all the files out of the message store directory. Then see if OE will
start after that.
