Are you referring to activation? If so, you should be given the option of
activating the software via a toll-free telephone number. If you have the
retail Academic Edition of Visual Studio .NET, there should be contact
information in the paperwork that came in the box. I'm guessing about you
edition, so please provide the edition you do have and the source (retail,
MSDN download, etc.).

Yes it was retail. I do have many papers but how would activating it via the phone allow my use on a personal PC?

When you installed the product, you had a certain number of days or uses to
activate it. You were reminded each time you started Visual Studio. If you
had gone into the activation dialog, you would have seen a choice between
activation via the internet or via a toll free telephone number.
From your original post:
"It says that I can't, however, because its not registered", I deduce that
you did not activate your Visual Studio .NET during the opportunity period,
and that now you cannot use it. If that's the case, you'll need to contact
Microsoft using the contact information I provided in my previous and see
what can be done in your case. If you are still getting a prompt or dialog
for activation, just go through the process via telephone.
If this is not your situation, please provide the exact wording of any
message you receive when you attempt to use Visual Studio.
