Default System crashes in setup. - 07-18-2003 , 02:04 PM

I bought vstudio.net academic v2003,
i also at this moment had to buy windows 2000 and upgrade
from win98. I upgraded and then ran the vstudio setup.
It ran fine until in the middle of step 2 when without
a warning icon or anything the system just stopped.(froze)
I would like some help from anybody with an idea thanks.

Do you have any anti-virus software, firewall, etc. running? If so shut all
that off, then retry the VS.NET install.
When you say "just stopped (froze)", do you mean you entire system locked
up, requiring a reboot, or that the install froze? If it was the
installation, try shutting down, restarting, then restart the installation.
If it was your entire system, and it does it consistently, see the bad news
below.
Upgrading from Win 98 to Win 2000 can produce instabilities. As a last
resort, I would suggest that you do a clean install of Windows 2000, then
try the VS.NET install.

I did do a clean install of windows 2000 and installed the
updates.
I eard about the anti virus thing i went to administrative
tools to shutdown all nonmicrosoft programs
running like the help suggested but i dont know how to
tell if it is a microsoft program. Yes my computer froze
the
entire system requiring a reboot, i couldn't even move the
mouse.

So much for the generic ideas.
When you say "in Step 2", exactly what does that mean? Are you saying the
lockup occurred with CD #2 in your drive? What other software is installed
besides the OS?
Perhaps more details will shed light on the problem.
You are entitled to free installation support from Microsoft as well. If you
wish to pursue that, look here:

The suggestion to stop all MS applications means things like Word, Outlook,
Explorer, etc. You should not be stopping anything with a control panel. You
should not be stopping anything with any administrative tools. You may have
stopped a service that was needed for the installation.

I would suggest that you reboot and just try the installation without
stopping anything and see what happens.

Well, I am still finding a way to install without any
problems. The other day i unexpectedly got through the
installation, but to my excitment when i loaded up
vstudio.net it brought up a error sign like
this, "dte.olb
not available or not registered. i used regsvr32 to
register it then i could load up vs.net no problemsWhen i
tried a project though it would bring up this "VC pack
not
registered", i decided to try and reinstall but the comp
froze again and i cant load vstudio.net anynmore, but if
someone has an idea for fixing the VC Pack thing other
than reinstalling it, I would like it.
.

gosh i shouldve listened and not of messed with the
services. I found out that FTER FIDDLING WITH THE SERvices
the the machine deb manager was turned off and i cant
start it. It sais my access is denied. can anyone tell me
why?

.

I found out why , my comp had to be added into the
administrative group.

I'm well aware that you don't want to hear this, but none
of the things
you've had to do to get to this stage should have been
necessary if the
original installation were not flawed.
I've installed VS.NET 2003 and 2003 on several PC's
(running both Win 2000
Pro and Win XP Pro) and never encountered the need to
manually register
anything or to add anything to the administrative, or any
other, group to
get it to work correctly.
At the rate you're going, you'll easily have expended
more effort than that
necessary to reinstall the OS, then VS.NET, with no
guarantee it'll ever be
right.
If I were you, I'd reinstall Win 2000(plus video drivers,
etc.) to a
formatted partition, then SP4, then VS.NET, making sure
you are signed on as
administrator of the PC for all installs. If anything
untoward happens while
installing VS.NET, write down *all* the details so you'll
have them when
seeking assistance (either in newsgroups or from MS Tech
Support).
Sorry, but based on the symptoms you describe, that's the
best advice I
have.

I will try that but first, have you tried installing
vstudio.net on a amd 700 mghz athlon processor?

Not on an AMD that old, but all my PC's here at home and one spare at my
office run AMD CPU's. The fact that it's an AMD CPU is not a factor. Given
the vintage of that CPU, it *is* possible that the age of the motherboard
and the chipset on it *might possibly be* factors, but I sincerely doubt it.
The chipsets I've successfully installed VS.NET on are: VIA KT266A, VIA
KT333, VIA KT400 and NVidia NForce2 CPU's ranged from AMD Athlon 1.0 GHz
through AMD Barton 2.2 GHz. I also installed to various Pentium III and
Pentium IV PC's in our classrooms and labs.
Can we assume that you have at least 256 MB of memory?
