Default upgrade VS.NET ACADEMIC from 2002 version to 2003 - 10-03-2003 , 10:58 PM

I have VS.NET ACADEMIC version 2002. I'd like to upgrade
to version 2003. Am I able to do this? Can I simply
download and install the .Net Framework from the
Microsoft downloads site? I am teaching Visual Basic.NET
so I need to be sure that VB.NET from this version will
not be disturbed.

Thanks,
Debbie

Debbie,

VS .NET 2002 and VS .NET 2003 can coexist on the same machine without any
problems. The projects from 2002 can be read (and converted) by 2003 but the
reverse is not possible.

Using VS .NET 2003 requires that you install VS .NET 2003 (which includes
the .NET 1.1 [or 2003] Framework. Just installing the 2003 .NET Framework
does not get you VS .NET 2003.

Hope this helps.

.
Sort of...I guess what I'm really asking is what does it
take to upgrade my version to version 2003. I don't
really want two versions on my machine, I'd rather just
upgrade but in the past Microsoft has not allowed
academic versions to be upgraded. Would I be better off
just buying the new academic 2003 edition and
uninstalling 2002?

Thanks,
Debbie

Debbie,

Yes, you are better off getting a copy of 2003 and removing 2002. AFAIK,
there is no upgrade for the Academic 2002 to Academic 2003 version of VS
..NET.

You should check with your school to see if they are a member of the MSDN
Academic Alliance (http://www.msdnaa.net/). If it is a member, you (and your
students) can download a copy of VS .NET 2003 Professional at no charge or
order a copy for $11.80 (plus shipping).

If your school is not a member, I would encourage you to request they join.
Cost is $799/year and all faculty and students are eligible to download a
large volume of MS development software (see link for more information).

Debbie,

I failed to mention that many text books come bundled with VS .NET 2003
Academic Edition. If yours does not, you might want to check with the
publisher who might be able to get you copies.
