Default MSDataSetGenerator Failed - 02-23-2006 , 10:40 AM

In a Windows Forms project (c#, VS2003) I have a dataSet problem I don't
understand. Opening the project, this error displays in the VS Task List
area ...

"The custom tool 'MSDataSetGenerator' failed while processing the file
'dsMain.xsd."

In the VS Solution Explorer I have three dataSet files ...

+ dsMain.xsd
dsMain.cs
dsMain.xsx

If I configure a dataAdapter on a form and from there generate a
table-structure to dsMain, another file, dsMain1.cs, appears under
dsMain.xsd. With no error details from 'MSDataSetGenerator,' I'm not sure
where to start looking for problems. Obviously something's wrong with my
dataSet schema. Could these problems be upstream of the dataSet, in the
dataAdapter command statments or connection? Or is the problem more likely
in the dataSet? I'm really not clear on what 'MSDataSetGenerator' even does.

Thanks for advice anyone can lend.

Hi,
MSDataSetGenerator is a plugin code generator that creates the .cs (or the
..vb) from the .xsd. IIRC, it failed for me with the same cryptic error
message when I used quotes in a value expression for a computed field. The
quote made it through to the xsd, which being XML is a no-no. I would look
for XML reserved characters in your field and table names. Perhaps trying to
validate the xsd can help spot the error.
BTW, look at http://www.codeproject.com/dotnet/InheritFromDataSet.asp for a
better MSDataSetGenerator. A bit fiddly to set up, but works well for me
after some minor revisions. Also follow the Shawn Wildermuth links - highly
instructive.

Greetings,
Frans
