I'm struggling to get an answer to this. I asked two months back on another forum and got no response. I asked on SQL forums but, of course, they use WS2003. So I'll be brief. I have two PCs Brand New PC: CoreDuo2.3/3.5gbRam/2xSATA7200rpm/VistaBusiness/NoAero Old 2003 Laptop: Centrino1.4/512mbRam/1xIDE5400rpm/XPPro Hardware wise, this new PC is at least twice the speed. I use VS2005 Team Edition & SQL2005 Dev. Edition on both. No crap on either machine. Mostly Winforms, lots of data. I've tried various tests: compiling, running, SQL throughput, loading projects, etc. My Laptop wins most tests. Some by quite a margin. I'm obviously wasting development time while watching the hourglass. On saying that, ditching Vista and jumping to XPPro/WS2003 is a couple of days work. Any thoughts? -- M. MCDBA : MCSD |

Something's not right on your new machine. My laptop is similar to your new PC: Core2Duo 2.2 gHz; 2GB RAM; 2xSATA7200rpm; VistaUltimate w/ Aero. Fairly vanilla installation. Using Avast AntiVirus, not McAfee or Symantec bloaters. I have no slowness issues with VS2003 or 2005. In fact, they definitely run as fast or faster than on my old laptop, a single-core 3.0 gHz system running XP-SP2. I'm using a current generation dual core machine with x86 Vista Ultimate, and development performence is just fine. I'm not running a virus scanner (they're worse than the virii), and using VS 2008, SQL 2005, and all the usual array of Office tools. The difference in Vista performance on my current generation desktop, and my older laptop is just unbelievable... -- Chris Mullins "Mikey Baby" <MikeyBaby (AT) discussions (DOT) microsoft.com> wrote in message news:6B63A9E7-D31F-43FE-BD39-7BDBA36834BF (AT) microsoft (DOT) com... I had issues with Vista until MS pushes out a performance and application compatability update. It's been great since. You should be fine making the switch, just make sure you install all the updates. |
