MS .Net Framework Setup cannot write to the setup log. - 12-17-2003 , 09:59 AM
I downloaded succesfully MS .Net Framework 1.1 with Windows Update to my
Windows XP Pro in a Dell Dimension 4550. However the installation (with
administrator rights) failed and produced the following error message:
"Microsoft .Net Framework Setup cannot write to the setup log.". I found the
downloaded file dotnetfx.exe from
C:\WUTemp\com_microsoft.Net_Framework_11_core_XP_5 986 having correct size
23698 KB. Trying to install it by doubleclicking the icon produced the same
error. Error code is "-2147020778" according to C:\Program
I did not find this error from any Microsoft sources. My computer should
have all available updates and I have not noticed any spesial problems with
it before this.
Can anyone help on this?

Have you been able to find an answer on this issue yet? I am also in need of this same solution.

Finally I found the solution, on my own: I had to install the package using
the built-in Administrator user account. Using my normal user account caused
the error message that I mentioned in my first posting although that account
was a member of Administrators group. Thus it should have worked as well but
it didn't. I do not know any reason for this behavior.
In practice I right-clicked the dotnetfx.exe icon and selected from the
shortcut menu the command "Run as..." and then from the pop-up window I
selected the radio button "The following user". For the user name
"Administrator" I gave the password, clicked OK and the installation began!
