Default Help from Lars...PLEASE?? - 08-13-2004 , 08:37 AM

Lars,
In the past I had talked with you on getting some help with J# Browser
Controls. You were a big help and now it looks like I need your help again.

I explained to you before that the company I work for has been producing
electronic textbooks on CD-ROM that displays in Internet Explorer. With
these books have hyperlinks within the pages that direct the users to
Applets that allow the user to exercise some of the examples in the book.
These applets are written in Java using VJ++ v1.1. With each CD we supply
the msjavx86.exe file so that they can be run in WinXP. My boss wants us to
consider new tools in developing this type of work and target the newer
versions of Windows (XP.....whatever is next). We have the complete Visual
Studio .NET tools from our MSDN subscription, but my problem is which should
I choose.

Should I develop in J#, ASP.NET, C# or what? We very much like the look of
the Applets and would like to keep that look, but if we have to build
applications, they must be called from the hyperlinks embedded in the html
pages of the book. Is this possible? All applet development right now is
done using Visual J++ 1.1 (very old) and we use verisign to sign all the
applets. We want the user to be able to place the CD in the drive and have
everything run off the CD and not on the users machine.

Can you help with any suggestions??

The main problem is probably the book readers/students computer variation.
FromWin95 (yes they are still out there) to WinXP (and Longhorn beta), and
lets not forget about (grumpy) Mac and Linux users. I think you should
target both the two big home desktop systems Windows and Macs.

The company we are doing all this work for wants us to target only
Windows 2000, XP and whatever newest MS operating system (Longhorn).

A Sun Java solution is probably still the technology that will target most
users on the client side. But since MSFT don’t want to ship Windows with
Sun
Java preinstalled, you must convince your users to install it (it’s
preinstalled on Macs).
This is something I have considered. Dropping the MS tools and going with
Sun tools. Already I have to convince XP users to install the msjavx86.exe
file in order to run the current applets. Having them to install the Java
plugin probably would be that difficult.

As for allowing the applets/programs to run from the web, the company I work
and the company I am writing the applets for are not ready to deploy that
yet. They very much want the product to run from a cd and only a cd.

Good luck with painting the cabin!

Jay

In that case, go for the .net platform. =)

That leaves asp.net out of the question. I think we only have a normal
..net
win forms application left. I think I would have gone for C# win forms
applications (so your users don't have to install any J# runtime redists).
If you don't rely on any fancy libraries or old COM stuff, you can run
everything from the Cd.

Good luck with painting the cabin!

I also did some wood work. Wood work is more fun than painting. =)
