Default Unable to start Windows Firewall - 04-03-2007 , 11:30 PM

XP Professional Home Edition
When trying to start Windows Firewall I received the below error message:

Double click Windows Firewall from Control Panel receive error message:
Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service
is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) service? Yes No
Clicked Yes
Received message: Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) service. OK

I have tried the following suggestions:
1. in KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892199
2. Netsh winsock reset and then ran services.msc and tried restarting
Received message: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied. OK
3. ran http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

None of the above is allowing me to start Windows Firewall. I contacted the
manufacturers and it was suggested that I reinstall Windows. Please let me
know there are other options. My ultimate goal is to connect to my company's
network via vpn connection. I am able to establish the connection on my
desktop computer but not my laptop. My initial analysis found that my laptop
has Windows Firewall disabled. Therefore, I am hoping that once I get the
Windows Firewall issue resolved it will allow me to connect to my work
network. Would someone please help me?

Thank You

I have the same problem, which only become apparent after the most recent Microsoft patches were downloaded and installed. I have MS Office on my laptop, however two other laptops on the network without MS Office have the same patches but are unaffected.

I have also lost all my network connections, and cannot "see" my network. To do printouts I'm having to email documents to one of the other laptops and print them out using the MS Document Viewer.

Madness!!!
