Default VS 2005 Analysis Services Project - Can't Create Named Query - 06-08-2009 , 01:28 PM

I'm trying to create a Named Query in a Data Source View for a Analysis
Services Project in VS 2005 Team Suite Team Edition. When I try to add a
new Named Query to my Data Source View (by using the "New Named Query..."
option from the pop-up menu or the VS "Data Source View" menu) I get the
"Object reference not sent to an instance of an object" error. The happens
in my current DSV, a new DSV in my solution or a brand new DSV in a brand
new solution and project. Adding tables works fine.

How can I get this to work?

Below is my version info:

Hi Cpnet,
To help isolate this issue, please confirm with me:
Did you install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Development
Studio (BIDS) on your computer?
What is the result if you use BIDS to add a new Named Query to your data
source view?

Thank you!

Hi Charles,

I get the same result when using BIDS (2005). I tried both with a brand new
project created in BIDS and also with a project previously created in VS
2005. The same thing happens with both projects.

Dear cpnet,
Thank you for your response.

Regarding this issue, I performed a test at my side, however I could not
reproduce your issue everything worked fine. Probably there might be some
corrutpion in your BIDS. I recommend that you first try resetting your BIDS
settings:
1. Open your BIDS, click Tools->Import and Export Settings...
2. Follow the wizard to choose Business Intelligence Settings and click
next to reset all the settings.
3. After that, close your BIDS and re-open it to see if it helps.

If this method does not work, I recommend that you try uninstalling SQL
Server 2005 Workstation Components from Control Panel and then re-install
it again.
To remove the workstation component, please follow the steps:
1. Open Add and remove programs and find Microsoft SQL Server 2005;
2. Click Remove, only select Worksation components and then follow the
wizard to remove it.

When you re-install the workstation components from your SQL Server 2005
setup program, please make sure that all the BIDS components in the
worstation components are selected.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions or
concerns.

Best regards,
Charles Wang

Hi Charles,

I've finally gotten the 'go ahead' to move to SQL Server 2008 and VS 2008.
I'm also on a tight deadline so rather than fiddle with VS/SQL/BIDS 2005
right now, I'm moving stuff over to 2008. Hopefully that will deal with my
issue. If I have time in a couple of weeks, I'll have another look at
VS/BIDS 2005.

Thanks,
cpnet

I was able to get my projects and databases moved over to VS 2008 and SQL
Server 2008. There were no issues with the move to 2008. However I'm
having the exact same issue in VS and BIDS 2008. It happens with my updated
projects and also with a new Analysis Services project created in VS 2008.
I tried a repair install of VS 2008. I also tried resetting the settings in
both VS 2008 and BIDS 2008. Nothing so far has helped. I'm in the middle
of packing for a move so I don't have easy access to my MSDN DVD's (other
than a Nov 2007 download of VS2008) . I'm downloading the SQL Server 2008
Developer edition now, and I'll try uninstalling and re-installing the
client tools. However, since this issue impacts both 2005 and 2008 VS and
BIDS (all on the same machine), I'm suspecting this won't likely help.

Is there any way to determine what object or registry entry is
missing/corrupt? Does the fact that this happens in VS and BIDS 2005 and
2008 help narrow down a possible cause?

Thanks,
cpnet

Hi cpnet,
Good morning!

If possible, I recommend that you perform a test on another computer with
only SQL Server 2008 BIDS or SQL Server 2005 BIDS installed to see if you
can use it for development purpose.

The error message you saw was a run-time error thrown out from .NET CLR, so
it is hard to determine what the object is except debugging or dump
analysis which can only be done by Microsoft Customer Support Services
(CSS). If this issue is urgent to your business, I recommend that you
contact CSS via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can
assist you in a more efficient manner. Please be advised that contacting
phone support will be a charged call.

To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
regional support phone numbers.

Thank you!

Hi Charles,

I had a test (Virtual PC) machine with XP sp2 and VS 2005 and BIDS 2005 (no
2008 stuff). This machine is able to create a named query in a DSV (Data
Source View) so I created a simple named query in this Virtual PC, then cut
and pasted the relevant XML from the DSV on the Virtual PC to the XML in the
DSV on my 'broken' machine. After altering the XML content a bit to get the
query I actually wanted, I am able to use the named query on my 'broken'
machine. I can "Explore Data" for the named query, it just seems like I
can't open the actual editor for the named query. As long as I edit the XML
directly, it's fine.

FYI, when I right click on the named query to edit it, I get the "object
reference not set to instance of object" error. I press [ok] to clear the
error dialog and the named query editing dialog flashes on the screen for a
fraction of a second before disappearing. I assume the missing object must
have something to do with the editing dialog for named queries in VS/BIDS
2005/2008.

I'm going to need to keep using my 'broken' machine for now... I don't have
time to re-install it, and it seems to be working ok otherwise. So for now,
I'll just have to manually edit the XML for named queries.
