Default access remote database?!? - 08-22-2003 , 09:30 PM

I've been searching around here for an answer to this, but find nothing. I am trying to setup a VSS 6.0d database on the network for our developers. I've installed vss on the server, using the shared server option. In order to do this, I had to manually delete a lot of files that were hangning around from an earlier version that was installed with VS6 on this computer. The local installation works great. I can add projects, check out work etc.

The problem is on the client. I've mapped a drive directly to the server from my dev box, and attempted to run netsetup.exe from there. The error message I get is:

Setup could not open the file:
\\valid.ip.address\...\netsetup.x86\setup.ini

I found a msg in reply to just this kind of problem, that perhaps installing from the disc on the client would help (as they are esentially the same installs) so I tried that. First I installed only the client software. At the point, I try to open VSS and connect to the created database on the remote machine. I can browse to the srcsafe.ini file, but when I try to open it, I get:

The database \\valid.ip.address\...\myDatabaseFolder does not exist, would you like to search for it?

Now just because I'm tired, I agree, browse to it again, try to open, and get the same error message.

Finally (after various other attempts and combinations), I uninstall everything on the client. Reinstall, but this time a full blown version with admin tools. I create a new test database on the remote server machine, from the client. This goes without a hitch. I can open and use the new db if I log on locally at the server. From the client, however, the now familiar error about the database (which I just created) not existing, comes to haunt me.

I found several posts suggesting that it has to do with user rights, so I fiddled with that a bit, share the server folder (everybody, full control, just to make sure I didn't miss anything) but no luck. I tried mapping to the database in administrative shares, and explicit shares, but no luck.

Can anybody please help? Maybe I've just been sitting here too long? Previous versions of sourcesafe didn't seem to be so bloody contrary....

TIA!

Hi Brett,

It sounds like you may be running into the problem described in the
following MS Knowledge Base article:

Q810652 - FIX: Visual SourceSafe Cannot Gain Access to Subdirectories on
DFS Shares

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=810652

If this sounds like your issue, you will need to contact product support as
described in the article for the fix.

I hope this helps!

Thanks very much for the reply, George. That is a cryptic support link, if
I ever saw one, but it seems to imply that MS will pick up the tab for
support calls on this issue. I may call them. However, over the last few
days, not being able to solve this, we decided to give CVSNT (www.cvsnt.org)
a try, as it looks like it will fulfill our needs, and be a little more
flexible with regards to network connectivity. We have developers all over
the country with varying connection capabilities, so the inflexible
architecture was an issue anyway.
